24 Hour Hackathon

This case study was focused on designing a digital product aimed to address increased streaming platform subscriptions in the US.

Scope: Case Study and Mid-Fidelity Prototype
Role: Team Lead, Design & Research
Duration: 24 Hours
Tools: Figma, FigJam, Adobe Photoshop

THE TEAM

A dedicated team of 3x UX designers and 3x Software Engineers worked together with lots of coffee and conversation to deliver a user-centered, solution based product in24-hours.

UX DESIGN PROCESS

We aspired to follow the agile design process, recognizing that not all steps could be completed within a 24-hour timeframe. Additionally, venturing into collaboration with software engineers for the first time highlighted the importance of empathizing with their needs, a critical factor in ensuring our success as designers.

RESEARCH & DISCOVERY

THE GIVEN PROBLEM

More people are using or subscribing to online streaming services than ever before. Although we may only think of the top streaming services there are more than 200 services available around the world.

85% of US households have at least one SVOD service, but only 7% of Americans have six or more streaming subscriptions.

How might we entice viewers to subscribe to a new streaming platform?

OUR RESEARCH

37%

of Americans want to watch a particular program that they heard about.

70%

of Americans want a streaming service where they can watch their desired content.

We found through our research that users find it difficult to determine which streaming platform currently offers the most shows they are interested in watching. This is particularly true Gen Z and millennial viewers.

“I can’t tell you how many times Google is wrong about where a movie is currently streaming.”
— GEN Z Viewer

From here we refined the how might we…

How might we create a platform for Gen Z and Millennial viewers to be able to make informed choices about what streaming services to subscribe to based on what they want to watch?

We crafted a persona based on the revised how might we and secondary research.

DESIGNING THE SOLUTION

Our solution was a comprehensive web application were users get real-time availability & recommendations for the best streaming platform for you based on titles and genres you like to watch.

OUR VALUE PROPOSITION

To assist users in finding streaming platforms, while also introducing alternative platforms, that are aligned with the titles and genres they want to watch.

Our application offers superior real-time library catalogs compared to other search platforms, providing users with a reliable resource to make informed choices.

NEXT STEPS

User Testing

In order to properly address user needs, testing would be valuable to further hone the function and value proposition of the app.

Video Previews on Hover

To enhance the user experience, we've implemented a video overlay feature. When users hover over each card a video preview appears, providing a quick and engaging glimpse into the content. This interaction aims to offer users a more dynamic and informed selection process.
